Aranyam's Guide: Understanding Perfumes Like Never Before

Fragrances are considered an integral part of everyone’s daily lives. Many individuals believe that wearing a fragrance will make them feel better; this is likely because there is a link between scent and emotion, as well as scent and memory; also, studies have shown that particular perfumes can modify emotions and even relieve anxiety and tension.

The word 'perfume,' is derived from the Latin term 'per fumus,' which simply means 'through smoke.' The full impact of personal fragrance is felt almost entirely through fumes. A fragrance can not only make you feel and look good, but it can also raise your confidence, reduce tension, and, if used correctly, it may also increase your happiness quotient! The ancient Persians, Romans, Arabs, and Indians all practiced the skill of scent manufacturing.

Tapputi, a Mesopotamian perfume manufacturer, is thought to be the first recorded perfume producer, dating from 1200 BC. India was also no stranger to the art of perfumery. The distillation of 'ittar,' or scent, is detailed in ancient Ayurvedic writings including the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita.

The oldest fragrance, on the other hand, may be found in Cyprus, where scientists discovered a 4,000-square-meter perfume factory that operated four millennia ago, during the Bronze Age! Since Islamic countries were traders, they had access to worldwide components to employ and thus contributed to the perfume production procedures from the 6th century forward. So musk, roses, jasmine, amber, and woody odors can all be traced back to the Arabs and Persians.

Then how are these perfumes made?

Oils are first derived from natural sources such as fruits and flowers using methods such as steam distillation, solvent extraction, maceration, and expression. After the oils have been obtained, they are combined according to a specific formula created by a fragrance corporation.

When the fragrance is ready, it's blended with the appropriate amount of alcohol and water. Perfume is similar to wine as the most expensive varieties are made to age for months, if not years, following the final blending before being bottled and sold.

Often you must have heard of 3 different notes of any fragrance, mainly Top note, Heart note, and Base note. Well, Perfumes are formed by combining a carefully crafted blend of essential scented oils with solvents such as alcohol and water. A fragrance's life cycle is three-fold, with the top notes coming first, then the heart, and ultimately the base notes.

Top Note

When you spray perfume, the 'top note' is the first thing you smell. This is the lighter, airier scent that reaches you and can last anywhere from 15 to 120 minutes, depending on the concentration of your fragrance. Floral and herbal fragrances are the ones to look out for in the Top-note category.

Heart Note

Once the top note's influence has worn off, you can smell the perfume's heart note, which is its main essence. These notes will begin to emerge about half an hour after applying the perfume and will remain for about four hours. Heavy florals are the most popular heart notes, as they provide the fragrance its most characteristic scent when they interact with your skin chemistry.

Base Note

When you wake up the next morning after wearing a perfume, it always leaves a lingering, familiar scent behind. These are the base notes, which begin to emerge as the heart notes fade and can persist for up to 12 hours following the application of the perfume. Heavy perfumes like musk, woody scents, and herbs like Sandalwood and vetiver are common base notes.

There are four different types of Perfumes available:

Parijat Perfume

Floral Perfumes

As the name implies, this type of scent consists of one or more flowers, and it is the most frequent and traditional type of perfume. Roses, Parijat, Mogra, Ratrani, Sonchafa & Bakula flowers are among the most frequent flowers used in perfumes. Most award-winning perfumes have at least one flower note, and these are the most romantic scents to wear!

Oriental Perfumes

These include fragrances sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, incense-inspired scents, and amber. Wear these for a formal and exotic vibe, as they are typical of and sourced from the East.

Saffron Jal

Fresh Perfumes

These contain a wide range of fruits, particularly citrus fruits and green scents. Fruits like lemon/verbena, orange, grapefruit, peach, and berries lend themselves to colorful and lively perfumes. Green scents include herbs like Saffron & Kasturi, which are energizing and unisex.

Woody Perfumes

Woody notes are the heaviest and strongest and are best used in the evening rather than during the day to make a powerful, sexual statement. Woody scents range from oaks and woods to musk, tobacco, and leather, and are among the most expensive and sought-after.

What is the best way to apply perfume?

You may have heard perfumers or specialists talk about 'pulse spots,' which are locations where scents work best. So, what are these things? The locations where your blood vessels are closest to the skin are known as 'pulse points.' The heat emitted helps release the scent more effectively since blood circulation occurs just beneath the surface of the skin in these locations. The inner section of both wrists, the base of your neck, behind your ears, inside the elbows, and behind the knees are all pulse sites to be aware of.

However, avoid rubbing your wrists together when applying the perfume; this will disrupt the perfume's mix of top, heart, and base notes. Also, only re-spray when required; otherwise, you'll disrupt the layering of top, heart, and base notes, as well as overdo the pleasant scent and convert it into an overpowering, overwhelming smell that no one can understand!

Finally, perfume is meant to be worn on the body, not on the clothes. While your clothes will surely absorb your body odor, do not contribute to it directly by spraying on it! Not only does it have the worst odor ever, but the oils may also permanently discolor your clothes.

Nevertheless, scents are often influenced by social trends and commercials, but you should always choose the smell that best suits your taste and perhaps personality.
